Choosing a Projector for Your Home Entertainment System [Part 1]
One of the most important decisions you will be faced with when creating your own personal home entertainment system is whether to choose a projector or a large television. While a large, flatscreen TV might be the more common choice, a projector has its own unique set of benefits for your home entertainment system. Here is a quick rundown of things to look for when shopping for a projector for your home entertainment system.
Aspect Ratio: A projector’s aspect ratio determines the length and width that the picture will display. As an example, a standard television aspect ratio is 4:3 while a wide screen TV utilizes a 16:9 aspect ratio. These days, a 16:9 ratio projector tends to be the most common, although fans of classic Hollywood may lean towards the vintage 4:3 format.
Resolution: Resolution refers to the number of pixels a projector can display and when it comes to picture quality, a projector’s resolution is more important than its aspect ratio. As a general rule, higher resolution results in a higher quality picture, which is a critical attribute for your home entertainment system as a whole.
Brightness: A projector’s brightness is measured in Lumens, but the actual brightness of the projected image depends on the projector as well as the screens. Choose a projector with a higher Lumens count only if your viewing area blocks out a minimal amount of light. If your room blocks out the majority of the ambient light, a projector with a higher Lumens count may result in the screen that is too bright.
