When setting up a home theater system, one of the most important things to get is the audio system. These days, the most popular home theater audio systems are variations of surround sound setups. When selecting the type of surround system to install, things can get a little confusing. To help make things clearer, here are three main types of surround sound audio systems for your home entertainment system.

  1. 5.1: This surround sound audio setup consists of six total speakers; five regular speakers and one subwoofer. Within the 5.1 surround sound category, there are two popular types: Dolby Digital, the variety commonly found in most movie theaters, and DTS. Distinguishing between the two types is usually a personal opinion, but the fact of the matter is that 5.1 surround sound is the most common type of surround sound setup for home theater systems.
  2. 6.1: The 6.1 surround sound setup includes one more additional speaker than 5.1 setups and is usually places along the rear wall to provide a more diffused sound. The two types of 6.1 surround sound setups are DTS-ES, providing users with a full bandwidth back surround channel and Dolby Digital EX which divides the audio between two rear speakers.
  3. 7.1: With the rise of the Blu-ray disc format came the invention of 7.1 surround sound. 7.1 channels are able to support the newest forms of audio channels such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
